A senior United Nations’ official has urged the British government to launch a public inquiry into impingements on the democratic rigths of activists by undercover police officers who have been infiltrating protest groups for decades.
UN special rapporteur Maina Kiai said he is “deeply concerned” about the British police use of undercover tactics to arrest non-violent protesters who only express their democratic rights.
Kiai pointed to the revelations about Mark Kennedy, an undercover officer who was exposed in 2011 as a police source within environmental movements, saying that they were as damaging as the phone hacking scandal prompted by the Leveson inquiry.
“The duration of this infiltration, and the resultant trauma and suspicion it has caused, are unacceptable in a democracy. It is a clear violation of basic rights protected under the Human Rights Act, and more generally under international law, such as the right to privacy”, he said addressing the case of Mark Kennedy in a news conference.
He added that Kennedy, as well as other related cases, has left a “trail of victims and survivors in its wake.”
