The UK government will unveil new reforms in the very near future, under which foreign police chiefs would be able to run British forces for the first time as constables.
Home Secretary Theresa May will rip up the rule that once said candidates for the police top job must be British citizens for national security reasons.
Under the current rule of recruitment, New York police chief Bill Bratton, known for his tough anti-crime tactics, was prevented from applying to take charge of the Metropolitan Police in 2011.
Hence, despite Bratton being Prime Minister David Cameron’s preferred candidate, the job went to British police chief Bernard Hogan-Howe.
“We want to see a greater diversity of backgrounds and experience in policing; it’s essential to have leaders with broader experience and new perspectives in the field”, said a senior Whitehall source.
However, Derek Barnett, president of the Police Superintendents’ Association said, “We certainly don’t accept the premise that there is a shortage of talent in the police service or that some of the criticism of leadership is valid.”
